HP extends inkjet web portfolio
LOS ANGELES, CA—HP is expanding its inkjet web portfolio with the T400 inkjet web press. The company made the announcement during a media event at O"Neil Data Systems on March 15-17. PrintCAN was there; here are the highlights:

The T400 rounds out the inkjet press line which already consists of the T200 and T300.

It has a 42" web width; prints at 600 feet per minute in colour or black and white; handles a substrate range from 40 to 200 gsm (with optional 350 gsm); and has a duty cycle of up to 140 million letter pages per month.

MICR support is now available across the range of presses.

Add ons to the press include a vision sytem that reads test patters to gauge the life of the print heads; a zero-speed splicer that reduces time to change a roll; a turret rewinder, currently under development, that can unload a roll without stopping the press.

HP is taking orders now, but since the presses are built to order, expect a 6-month delivery time.

At the O'Neil operation, the T400 replaces the work done by 5 roll and 34 cutsheet toner digital presses.

O'Neil, which has a T200 and aT350 in additon to a T400, said it had achieved a single-day peak production of almost 8 million impressions.

The company, which specializes in four or five vertical markets, is opening a new, 218,000 sq. ft. all-digital plant in Dallas to keep up with demand.

Inside the operation, much of the work usually done on Indigos is going to inkjet, it was reported during a tour. The quality of the inkjet press does not match the Indigo but neither does the price. Jobs on the Indigos can be 5 to 6 times that of inkjet making the quality compromise very attractive to most buyers.
