MARKHAM, ON—Transcontinental Inc. is moving printing, variable imaging and inline finishing operations from its Rexdale, Ont.-based Yorkville plant to its Markham-based PLM plant, the company told PrintCAN today. Bindery work, high-speed inserting and lettershop operations will continue to run out of the Yorkville plant.

Marcel Courville, Transcontinental’s vice president of marketing and products group for Ontario, said the shift will cause some “duplication in roles” and “some job reductions” but could not confirm a number, though he did say layoffs would affect a “minority of employees.” The two plants combined employ about 650-700 people, Courville said.

The decision to merge the two operations will improve efficiencies, Courville said, and is part of Transcontinetal’s “rationalization plan,” which was first announced in February.

Transcontinental acquired the PLM Group in 2007.
